Chronic pain can drastically disrupt a person’s life. While a person may feel powerless, one potential way to combat this debilitating condition is by losing weight. Here are five excellent ways to battle chronic pain with weight loss:

Change your mindset

The key with weight loss for any reason is to change your mindset. It’s not a “diet,” because those are only temporary. Consider it a lifestyle change. Make an effort to eat healthy foods and limit the consumption of processed foods not for a few weeks, but for the rest of your life.

Create goals

Having something to strive for is key for weight loss success. Instead of just having one goal, a person can have both short and long term goals. For example, a short term goal would be to eat a slice of fruit every day instead of sweets or junk food. This can help a person stay focused and increase their chances of losing weight, which could lead to a decrease in their chronic pain.

Drink plenty water

Water has many amazing weight loss benefits. For example, many people mistake hunger for thirst. By simply drinking water before meals, a person could become fuller faster, resulting in less food eaten.

Create a healthy nutrition plan

A healthy diet is key to weight loss. Avoid processed foods, fast foods and foods high in sugar. Opt for natural foods such as fruits, veggies, spices and lean meats as alternatives. Healthier foods are nutrient dense, meaning they have more nutrients per serving than processed and junk foods. They also have a lower calorie content, which can help a person get full on fewer calories. In addition to weight loss, a healthy diet can help strengthen the body, allowing it to repair itself and recover from chronic pain.

Celebrate progress. Weight loss and the decreasing chronic pain can be a slow process, but it’s not impossible. A great way to stay motivated and continue on the weight loss journey is to celebrate small milestones along the way:

  • Treat yourself to a movie
  • Buy a new outfit
  • Have a guilt-free serving of your favorite dessert or cheat meal

These small rewards can boost your spirits and let you know you’re on the right track. Chronic pain affects millions of people daily. By eating a healthy diet and managing their weight, a person can be one step closer to becoming pain free and living a normal life again.
