Nutrition and Inflammation


Though many people live with chronic pain, many of these individuals do not benefit from nerve blocks and taking medications are often accompanied with unwanted side effects. As a result, using an anti-inflammatory diet may be an optimal alternative. Consuming the correct combination of foods may yield positive outcomes.

Foods that cause inflammation and have adverse effects include refined carbohydrates, fried foods, soda and other sugar sweetened beverages, red meat, and margarine. Though it may be somewhat expected, the food that causes inflammation in general are also the same foods that are harmful to an individual’s health. Instead, it is beneficial for an individual to consume foods that are rich in natural anti-oxidants such as blue berries, apples, and leafy greens. Other foods, such as nuts and coffee may also prove useful against inflammation.

In a broader perspective, the suggested overall diet for battling inflammation is the Mediterranean diet, which frequently involves the consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grain, fish, and beneficial oils. Additionally, eating less processed foods while in turn, increasing an individual’s intake of natural foods may have benefits in terms of physical health as well as emotional health. Other diets that have shown potential benefits include a low-carb diet which serves as an anti-inflammatory for people who are obese or have metabolic syndrome, as well as the vegetarian diet that also fights inflammation.
