Oral steroids are prescribed for inflammation and pain, especially when both are focused in the lower back. You may receive a specialized dose pack that provides an immediate higher dose so you feel immediately relief from the pain. Over the course of the pack, the dosage becomes lower.
In general, when taken as directed, very few side effects may occur with oral steroids. When oral steroids are abused or taken over a long period of time, this may result in the following:

What are Neuroleptic Drugs?
Typically prescribed for seizures, neuroleptic drugs have been shown to be helpful at alleviating pain that is focused in the nerves such as neuropathy. It may vary depending on your condition. Your doctor will provide an exact timeline; however, these drugs can be safely taken over a long period of time, unlike oral steroids. Again, this will vary but in general, prescriptions can be taken up to three times per day at 300 to 400 mg per dose.
