Can opioids be the only solution for pain relief? Is there any other form of treatment without the serious side effects? Many only know opioids as the answer for pain management. There are various complementary and alternative options to alleviate pain without the possibility of opioids addiction.

Acupuncture

In Western societies, acupuncture points are placed where nerves, muscles, and connective tissue are stimulated to increase blood flow, activating your body’s own natural painkillers (beta-endorphins), reduce inflammation, and stimulate nerve regenerations.

Massage Therapy

Manual manipulation of the soft tissues can be used for relaxation and rehabilitation to reduce pain and aid with injuries. Massage therapy is performed by applying fixed or movable pressure, stretching, kneading, holding, or vibration. Massage increases blood flow, relieve muscle tension, improve joint mobility, reduces inflammation, and brings warmth to affected area. Massage produces a “feel good” feeling allowing you to relax, in turn, increases levels of serotonin (neurotransmitter) which decreases the levels of stress hormones.

Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic treatment focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system; and the effects of these disorders on general health. Spinal manipulation, known as a chiropractic adjustment, is to restore joint mobility by applying controlled force into a hypo-mobile or restricted joint resulting in tissue injury. Much success has been seen back pain, migraine headaches, neck pain, fibromyalgia, joint pain, and many other conditions. A chiropractor also uses ultrasound therapy, postural and exercise education, nutrition, ergonomic training, as well as other treatment options for alternative options for pain relief.

Herbal Medicine

The parts of plants, such as seeds, berries, bark, leaves, roots, and flowers of plants manage pain. Some herbal medicine has shown to reduce inflammation and pain, similar to the effects of NSAIDS. Many pharmacological drugs are created from herbal medicine. Capsaicin, ginger, and turmeric alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana is a controversial option for pain relief. Marijuana consists of hundreds of chemical compounds; a commonly researched compound is THC that binds to brain receptors to alleviate pain and anxiety. This provides the sensation of “feeling high”.

There are many alternative natural pain management options besides opioid painkillers, which cause severe side effects and possible addiction.
