To date, the question as to why people get fibromyalgia remains largely unresearched. Suspected culprits include, but are not limited to, the following list.

Gluten Sensitivity or Gluten Intolerance

Various health conditions have been associated with gluten intolerance. As it is suspected of being a catalyst for fibromyalgia, some symptoms of gluten intolerance are not (intuitively) related to the digestive tract. Brain fog, depression, joint pain, and even fever are common nongut symptoms.

Candida Overgrowth Syndrome

Oftentimes, people afflicted with fibromyalgia have an overgrowth of candida, a form of yeast which stays in the intestines. Overproduction of candida may lead to fatigue, pain, cognitive and digestive problems.

Thyroid Disorders

Genetics and Gender

Just as the case is with environmental factors, no scientific evidence proves that fibromyalgia is passed on genetically either. But strikingly, studies have demonstrated that an identical twin will have a 15 percent increased likelihood to become afflicted with the condition if his/her twin has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This clearly points to the fact that more research is needed in the field of genetics on this subject.

In terms of gender alone, women tend to produce the calming neurotransmitter, called serotonin, less than men. This factor does play into the theory as to why men may suffer from fibromyalgia less than women.
