About Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture is a type of alternative medicine in which thin needles are placed into the body. The technique is performed by an experienced and licensed professional; where each practitioner has their own distinctive style. To establish what form of acupuncture therapy will be most beneficial for you, the practitioner will ask questions regarding your lifestyle, behaviors, and symptoms to understand how to tailor their treatment approach.

The acupuncture specialist may also intimately observe:

  • The areas of your body that are tender or aching
  • The color, shape, and coating of your tongue
  • Your facial complexion
  • The rhythm, strength, and quality of your heartbeat via the wrist pulse

Prior to receiving acupuncture therapy, the preliminary evaluation may take up to an hour.

Getting Acupuncture Treatment

During the treatment, the practitioner will alert you of where on your body the treatment will be employed. Depending on the treatment area, you may need to remove clothing and will be able to wear a towel, gown, or sheet to maintain your privacy. You will them lie on a padded table to receive the treatment, which entails:

  • Insertion of the needle(s)
  • Manipulation of the needle(s)
  • Removal of the needle(s)

Post Acupuncture Treatment

Following acupuncture treatment, some people may feel energized, whereas, other people feel relaxed. How your body responds to the treatment is very dependent on the individual. The advantages of acupuncture can often be tricky to evaluate, but a lot of people believe that it is a useful way to control an array of painful states. Regardless, if your symptoms do not start to get better within several weeks, it is likely that acupuncture is not the best therapy for you.

It should be noted that many studies have shown that some forms of simulated acupuncture seem to work as well as real acupuncture. Furthermore, there are indications that acupuncture works best for people that anticipate it will work, suggesting somewhat of a placebo effect.
