8 Natural Treatments for Anxiety
Lack of sleep, nicotine, stress, pain and depression are just a few of the causes of anxiety. Around 3.3 million adults in the U.S. experience anxiety.
The following natural remedies can help combat and manage anxiety symptoms:
1. Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil contains bioactive ingredients, such as linalyl acetate and linalool, which soothe the nervous system and help relieve depression. Adding 4 drops of pure oil in 2 cups of boiling water and breathing in the pleasant scent promotes relaxation. Mixing it with almond oil and applying it to the skin can also help combat anxiety.
Almonds provide nutrients that combat anxiety and depressive moods. An effective way to incorporate almonds into the diet is to make a paste and mix it with milk. Soak almonds overnight, peel in the morning, crush into a fine paste and mix with milk. Add a pinch of nutmeg for improved results.
Dehydration can lead to anxiety and panic attacks. Water enables the body to function normally. Without proper hydration, blood circulation is poor, muscles are tense and the body becomes weak which can trigger anxiety.
Nutmeg promotes relaxation which eases stress and depression. It also improves sleep quality. Adding one-quarter teaspoon of ground nutmeg to food or drinks does wonders for the body. Inhaling nutmeg oil or essence helps boost mood.
5. Lemon Balm
Also known as Melissa officinalis, lemon balm is part of the mint family. It contains relaxation properties and helps treat anxiety and appetite issues. Steeping 1 teaspoon of dried lemon balm in hot water for one minute makes a relaxing tea. Lemon balm is also available in supplement form; however, it should not be used for an extended period of time.
Chamomile promotes relaxation and has a mild sedative effect. It is widely available in tea and supplement form. Dried chamomile flowers should be brewed for 10 minutes before straining and drinking it.
7. Diet and Exercise
Diet and exercise promote a physically healthy body and help regulate hormones that cause anxiety.
Rosemary has calming properties; it calms the digestive and respiratory system. It also improves brain function. Adding 2 teaspoons of dried rosemary in 1 cup of hot water and steeping it for 10 minutes makes a relaxing tea.
