Coping is a conscious effort to solve a problem, in order to master, minimize or reduce stress. Coping strategies are important for individuals living with chronic pain to help deal with the pain on a daily basis. A coping strategy is not the same as the treatment. Coping is similar to stress management in that is helps reduce stress but the goal of coping is to live better on a daily basis with chronic pain.

Coping skills and strategies can be very personal. Strategies that work for one person may not work for another person. An individual should be open to trying differnet types of coping skills in order to find the ones that work the best for them.
