Finding Relief From Neck Pain

Cervical pain, often referred to as neck pain, is a common medical issue that is caused by various medical conditions or injuries. Cervical pain can be felt in any part of the neck. In a given year, doctors receive over 10 million reports of neck pain.

Causes of Neck Pain

Causes of neck pain are varied. Some of the most common reasons for neck pain include the following:

  • Injury or accident (e.g, car crash)
  • Strain
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Pinched nerve
  • Virus and disease
  • Sleeping position

Identifying the Cause of Neck Pain

Writing a pain journal and documenting each instance of neck pain is a valuable tool for healing. A pain journal should be specific and include what occurred when the pain began. This will help identify activities that aggravate the condition.

Making an appointment with a health care provider is the next logical step. After a physical exam and medical history review, a series of tests may be scheduled to aid in a proper diagnosis. Tests may include x-rays, CT scans, and/or MRIs.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Neck Pain

Non-invasive treatments for neck pain include the following:

  • Massage therapy
  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Meditation training
  • Over-the-counter medication
  • Prescription medication
  • Electro-stimulation therapy

If neck pain persists and non-invasive treatments are not providing relief, surgery and/or a minimally invasive procedure, such as an electrode implant, are viable options.
