Living with Chronic Pain

Supporting Someone With Chronic Pain

Supporting someone who lives with chronic pain is not easy. Chronic pain can be easily misjudged by those who are not experiencing the pain first-hand. Others may assume that an individual is sounding better or looking healthy but in reality, that person is struggling to seem normal. Loved ones, friends and others, who are a part of the individual’s life, are also affected as the individual’s chronic pain. It can be overwhelming for everyone.

It is helpful for those supporting someone with chronic pain to understand that the condition may change from day to day. While one day, the chronic pain may subside enough to allow a walk outside, another day the pain may be too overwhelming and debilitating to do basic functional activities. The recurring theme is that one should not make assumptions about chronic pain and should be as understanding as possible.
