Chiropractic treatment involves hands-on manipulation of the spine or other joints. It is an alternative or complementary treatment option most commonly used for musculoskeletal pain. Chiropractic treatment is provided by a trained and licensed chiropractor.

Chiropractic manipulation

During chiropractic manipulation, a chiropractor applies sudden, controlled force that moves the spine or a specific joint beyond its regular range of motion. This can improve range of motion and help reduce pain. It can also help improve the body’s overall alignment.

Other chiropractic treatments

In addition to joint manipulation, chiropractic treatment may involve strengthening exercises, stretches, or soft-tissue mobilization to help improve symptoms. Treatments such as spinal traction, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), ultrasound, and bracing or taping may also be used.

Benefits

Chiropractic treatment may be beneficial for neck or back pain, headaches, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and various other musculoskeletal injuries or health conditions. It is considered to be a safe treatment for most individuals.

Risks

Serious complications are rare but include disc herniation, spinal nerve compression, or stroke. Individuals with severe osteoporosis, increased risk of stroke, bone abnormalities in the neck, or cancer in the spine should avoid chiropractic manipulation.
