Engaging in social activities is beneficial to both physical and mental health. Staying socially active can help prevent social isolation and loneliness, which are both linked to negative health outcomes. This includes depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cognitive decline.

In addition to helping prevent these negative health outcomes, engaging in social activity benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Improved mood
  • Reduced stress
  • Increased healthy habits, such as physical activity
  • Strengthened immune system
  • Improved brain health, including lowered risk of dementia
  • Improved heart health
  • Longer life expectancy

Engaging in social activity provides an opportunity for individuals to participate in ventures they enjoy or to try new experiences. It can also help develop and grow social connections or a support network. Regular social engagement is just as important as other favorable habits, such as regular physical activity and consuming healthy foods, and should be made a priority.
