What is lumbar radiculopathy?

Radiculopathy is the medical term for symptoms caused by irritation or compression of one or more spinal nerve roots. Spinal nerve roots connect the spinal cord with the nerves that supply sensation and motor function to the rest of the body.

At-home treatments for lumbar radiculopathy

In addition to conventional medical treatments and alternative and complementary treatments, at-home treatment options may help ease symptoms of lumbar radiculopathy. At-home treatments include the following:

  • Diet plays an important role in overall health. Adding certain foods to the diet and eliminating others can help relieve inflammation. Processed foods and foods that are high in trans fats and refined sugar increase inflammation. Eating clean includes whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Healthy lifestyle habits can decrease pain levels and fatigue. Accepting limitations and planning activities allows for sufficient rest periods. Bypass or limit activities that worsen pain. Nicotine delays healing and accentuates pain; therefore, it should be avoided.
  • Back braces are low-cost aides that can reduce swelling and provide support, which may result in decreased pain. When used in combination with physical therapy, a back brace may also speed the healing process.
  • Temperature therapy involves the use of heat or cold to reduce pain. Heat therapy relaxes stiff joints and muscles; whereas, cold therapy numbs acute pain and reduces inflammation. Alternating between heat and cold therapy can help reduce certain types of pain.
