Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is also referred to as neuropathy. It is a disorder that affects the nerves or active of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The PNS uses nerves to connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.

Within the PNS there are 3 types of nerves: sensory nerves, motor nerves, and autonomic nerves. The sensory nerves communication message about senses, such as temperature or pressure, to the brain. Motor nerves carry messages from the brain to the body to tell muscles to move. Autonomic nerves transmit messages to control bodily functions, such as breathing or digestion, things that a person cannot control.
